In the 1800s, Taiwan was under Qing Empire control until Japan took over in 1895. After the ROC's establishment in 1912, it sought control over Taiwan, which Japan controlled during WWII. Amidst this, a civil war erupted in China, leading to the establishment of the PRC. The ROC retreated to Taiwan, claiming to be the legitimate Chinese government, while the PRC emerged as the CCP. Both claimed Taiwan, sparking ongoing tensions over territorial sovereignty.
